Summary

July, 1962

Sixteen year-old Evie Epworth stands on the cusp of womanhood。 But what kind of a woman will she become?

The fastest milk bottle-delivery girl in East Yorkshire, Evie is tall as a tree and hot as the desert sand。 She dreams of an independent life lived under the bright lights of London (or Leeds)。 The two posters of Adam Faith on her bedroom wall (‘brooding Adam’ and ‘sophisticated Adam’) offer wise counsel about a future beyond rural East Yorkshire。 Her role models are Charlotte Bronte, Shirley MacLaine and the Queen。 But, before she can decide on a career, she must first deal with the malign presence of her future step-mother, the manipulative and money-grubbing Debbie。

If Evie can rescue her bereaved father, Arthur, from Debbie’s pink and over-perfumed clutches, and save the farmhouse from being sold off then maybe she can move on with her own life and finally work out exactly who it is she is meant to be。

Moving, inventive and richly comic, The Miseducation of Evie Epworth is the most joyful debut novel of the year and the best thing to have come out of Yorkshire since Wensleydale cheese。

I LOVED this book - a much-needed tonic! It's definitely in my top 3 reads this year。 So much fun and wickedly witty with loveable, relatable characters。 It's set in the 1960s and follows the escapades of 16-year-old Evie Hepworth in her Yorkshire village。 I would liken it to a sort of a quirky Cinderella story of the 60s。 Lots of humour, addictive, vivid and wise。One to add to a summer reading list。 I LOVED this book - a much-needed tonic! What a wonderful book, full of humour and emotion。 I fell in love with Evie and the book in the first few pages when I burst into laughter and continued to do so through the rest of the book。 I kept checking that it was actually written by a man and I can assure you it was, as Matson joined our book club remotely and he was just as nice as Evie。 It’s hard to believe this is his first book as the characters and dialogue sparkle on the page。 What a lovely balm for the soul in these difficult time!

A pleasant, if somewhat predictable story with a lot of ‘padding’。

Probably more of a 3。5。 Really enjoyed the characters and the quirky story of Evie。 Just felt it was missing something but not quite sure what!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t really good either。 Evie was lovely and kind and I loved her character。 Arthur, the kind, warm-hearted dad was a bit stupid, naive and ridiculous, did he really not see through Christine?? I also feel that comparing him to Heathcliff, the anti hero, wife beating, emotional and mental abuser of Wuthering Heights was confused and ill thought by the author, clearly not read it。 Makes no sense。

Fun read, interesting perspective of a 16 year old on a Yorkshire farm。

What a joy, what a joy, what a joy this book is, one of my favourites this year and I am sure it will be in my Top 10。 🔅Set in the 1960’s we meet Evie a 16 year old girl who is on the cusp of womanhood and is waiting to find out what kind of woman she wants to be。 The book has a fantastic set of characters who are vibrant and they wrap you up in this moving and touching story。🔅Evie lives with her widowed father, Arthur and her soon to be step-mother Christine who is always with her put upon moth What a joy, what a joy, what a joy this book is, one of my favourites this year and I am sure it will be in my Top 10。 🔅Set in the 1960’s we meet Evie a 16 year old girl who is on the cusp of womanhood and is waiting to find out what kind of woman she wants to be。 The book has a fantastic set of characters who are vibrant and they wrap you up in this moving and touching story。🔅Evie lives with her widowed father, Arthur and her soon to be step-mother Christine who is always with her put upon mother Vera。 We also have Mrs Scott-Pym a neighbour, who lives her best life with her dog Sadie and over the course of the book her fabulous daughter Caroline。 There is also Mrs Swithenbank whose tummy troubles led to one of the funniest couple of pages I have ever read。 Once you read it I defy you not to be laughing out loud。 🔅This is a funny, witty and charming coming of age story。 What is remarkable is the way the male writer has created such a great character in Evie, she is intelligent and he has captured very well what it is like to be 16。 He also writes about female relationships exceptionally well and the love, friendship and nostalgia seeps from the pages。 🔅There snippets throughout the book about how Evie’s mother and father met and how Arthur became to be widowed and these were beautiful and moving and left me quite emotional。 🔅This book is about following your dreams and about being who you are meant to be, surrounded by those that love you。 🔅I thought this was a brilliant book, 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 , all the stars and I would encourage everyone GO OUT AND BUY THIS BOOK !!!!!! and enjoy each and every page。 🔅I have also realised that the writer is working on a trilogy of Evie and I can’t wait to meet her again to find out how her life has been。 I am already excited, I hope she is living her best life ❤️This is also my June pick for @bookshelfraiders prompt 👍 。。。more

Abandoned reading at chapter 12。 Should have known when the first chapter contained a man shagging a cow that this would be an odd read。 Liked the Yorkshire references but such a odd tale。。。。。

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - This debut was another delightful uplifting read, and was extra special as I read it while on holiday in Yorkshire。 The northern, Yorkshire spirit really shone through and I felt it through me as I read。 There were times where it made me laugh, made me a little sad but mostly it made me incredibly happy。 I loved that it was set in the 1960s and had a bit of a desperate housewives vibe - it added a quirkiness to the book。 There were so many brilliant characters - I loved following Evie as 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - This debut was another delightful uplifting read, and was extra special as I read it while on holiday in Yorkshire。 The northern, Yorkshire spirit really shone through and I felt it through me as I read。 There were times where it made me laugh, made me a little sad but mostly it made me incredibly happy。 I loved that it was set in the 1960s and had a bit of a desperate housewives vibe - it added a quirkiness to the book。 There were so many brilliant characters - I loved following Evie as she goes through an important summer at age 16, an important age for so many。 The rest of the characters in Evie's world were so bizarre - I loved them all。 I even loved to hate the snooty Christine! I demolished this in one day, holding my attention throughout。 I can't wait to see what else @matson_taylor_ has in store! 。。。more

This book made me laugh out loud, it also made me cry and feel so many other emotions! A bit light weight to my usual read but quite funny, easy going and I liked the Yorkshire connections。

A heartwarming and quietly witty tale about Evie, a sixteen year-old girl who is trying to decide who/what she wants to be in The Future。 I loved this book—it's the perfect kind of 'feel good' for a warm, summer's day。 A heartwarming and quietly witty tale about Evie, a sixteen year-old girl who is trying to decide who/what she wants to be in The Future。 I loved this book—it's the perfect kind of 'feel good' for a warm, summer's day。 。。。more

I can't be objective about this book。 It was exactly what I needed at exactly the right time。 A balm。 Devoured in a day - the first time since I was a child that's happened。 Evie is。。。like me! A bookish Yorkshire lass who loves words and cake。 A warm cosy and easy read (in the best way) with heaps of glorious 60s nostalgia。 I can see this as a lovely indie movie。 I miss her already。 I can't be objective about this book。 It was exactly what I needed at exactly the right time。 A balm。 Devoured in a day - the first time since I was a child that's happened。 Evie is。。。like me! I read this as it was listed as a Richard and Judy book and they normally pick really good books。 This one was ok。 Just a little predictable。 I quite liked the main character, but I found some of the other characters really frustrating。 A quick easy read。

Super easy reading! All the characters in this book are superbly developed, and whilst it does feature some heavier themes, this in no way detracts from the loveliness of the story。 Very heartwarming。

I've never laughed out loud so much whilst being completely moved reading a book like this before! Completely fell in love with Evie, navigating her teen years in such a mischievous and endearing way。 Her bright eyed anticipation of her future and innocent ideas of life is so beautifully portrayed, and feels so nostalgic reading as someone in their mid twenties reading。 Every character in this was so well thought out, with their relationship with Evie all so different yet beautiful and complex。 I've never laughed out loud so much whilst being completely moved reading a book like this before! As someone who has grown up in East Yorkshire and lived the majority of my life here it was exciting to read this book and make the connection with Evie and all the different places she visits。 I found this book such an easy read and Evie as a character entertaining with her youthful view of the world at sixteen。 The brief interludes within the chapters showcasing her parents relationship。 What was more entertaining was being transported back to 1962 and how I thought things seemed so different As someone who has grown up in East Yorkshire and lived the majority of my life here it was exciting to read this book and make the connection with Evie and all the different places she visits。 I found this book such an easy read and Evie as a character entertaining with her youthful view of the world at sixteen。 The brief interludes within the chapters showcasing her parents relationship。 What was more entertaining was being transported back to 1962 and how I thought things seemed so different back then but in reality it didn't seem too far from the present day just with a lot less technology but the true Yorkshire friendliness and kindness is still the same。 。。。more

She is sparky and bright, determined and funny。 Her life in early 1960s Yorkshire is played out in, what feels like a believable, if adventure-strewn, fashion, filled to the brim with naiveties, nostalgia and colloquialisms。 This is a delightful gem of a novel to immerse yourself into Evie's word and its cast of lively characters。 Moving, hilarious and entertaining, I'd love to read a second installment in Evie's life。 。。。more

Being a Yorkshire Lass I enjoyed this, the style of writing and language used were perfect。 However there was one bit I found totally unnecessary, that being the farmer having sex with a cow?! Added nothing to the story, I actually found it quite disturbing。 I’ve lived in Yorkshire all my life and fortunately this behaviour is not common place!! This part wasn’t dwelled on at all but it was mentioned a couple of times, really not needed in such a good book。 Would have been 4 stars, had it not be Being a Yorkshire Lass I enjoyed this, the style of writing and language used were perfect。 However there was one bit I found totally unnecessary, that being the farmer having sex with a cow?! Fun easy readVery easy to read。 I feel like this is a book about differences。 Between Evie and Christine。 Between village and city life。 Between pre-war and post-war Britain。 Between traditional and modern values。 I loved seeing the world through Evie’s teenage eyes - the frustration and awkwardness but always the love for her father and her friends。 My only disappointment was the “magic” element - I felt like the book was going in a certain direction and then got pulled back。
